Course Description

The course offers an introduction to Greek Mythology and its representation in ancient art. Particular emphasis will be placed on the social contexts and media of Greek mythology: the Greek theatre and the Roman arena, dinner parties (symposia) and religious festivals, architectural sculpture and painted pottery, wall paintings and mosaics, and funerary art. The appropriation and transformation of Greek myths in all these contexts and media, as well as the discrepancies between texts and images, will be leitmotifs of the course. Frequent reference will also be made to the reception of Greek and Roman mythology in later art, as well as in music and film.
